Story
This song was one of the ones I was most excited to work on for this album. I absolutely adored the instrumental, and it made me feel like I was floating. Right off the bat, I could picture the idea for the track. It felt like ghosts and lost love and floating and visions. I thought of the fact that I'm likely gonna be moving far away soon, and I tried to picture what it would feel like to think of my girlfriend while I was gone. I came up with the line "Your absence feels more real than your presence sometimes", and built the rest of the song off of that.
In general, this song isn't about something in my life like many of the others on the album. Instead, this song just tries to capture that feeling of missing someone to the point of euphoria instead of aching. A kind of break in reality. I intentionally left the lyrics vague so that they can apply to just about anything. Missing someone you've lost, missing someone you still have, it can be anything!
"On my own with your ghost" is kind of an oxymoronic line, and that is on purpose. Sometimes even being with someone can be lonely! And other times, it might feel like they are there even if they are nowhere near you.
I did write the line "Legend has it she’s a ghost cursed to roam this broken world" thinking about my girlfriend. She stands out as a staunch believer in Christ in a world full of evil, so my thought is that, in a way, all believers roam this world as ghosts.
The song generally describes an encounter with the "ghost" (whoever that might be for you) in the middle of the night as an apparition floating above your bed. Sometimes missing someone can be a stronger feeling than sitting right next to them.
